Asaba ready to host Africa’s premier athletics event, says monarch

The Iyase of Asaba Kingdom, Chief Patrick Isioma Onyeobi, has assured of the readiness of Delta State people to play host to the continent’s premier athletics event holding from August 1st to 5th.

The 2018 edition of the Confederation of African Athletic’s African Senior Athletics Championship will hold in Asaba, the capital city of Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta State.

Onyeobi, who is the traditional prime minister of Asaba Kingdom said the people are happy to cooperate with and complement the state government in hosting visitors from all over the world to the event.

“We are happy to host 54 countries of Africa in Asaba. God bless this present administration for transforming Asaba,” he said, at a news conference which held recently in his palace.

“Asaba is a peaceful place with a unique cultural heritage and our people are peace-loving people. I, therefore, want to use this forum to tell Asaba people that government cannot do it alone, this government needs your support to succeed,” he said, while commending the governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, for the timely completion of the second phase of preparatory works in the Asaba township stadium.

“Our governor has done so well for Asaba and Delta state and deserves commendation from all angles, especially on roads and school infrastructure.”

According to him, Asaba is now agog with preparations and renovations already taking place to welcome delegates from 54 African countries to Asaba, the state capital, for the championship.

Onyeobi reminded the people of Delta State to maximize the opportunities presented by the hosting right of the event, given to the state by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), which he said will not only harness the budding talents that abound in the state but will also strengthen grassroots sports.

He urged the hoteliers to complement government’s preparation with the adequate upgrade of their facilities and necessary training of their personnel to showcase good customer relationship.

“Governor Okowa has performed wonderfully well in delivering the much-needed dividends of democracy to our state to the extent that cynics are amazed by his cost-efficient service delivery through the faithful implementation of his well-articulated SMART Agenda,” he said.

Iyase called attention to the tourist sites in the state.
